Subtle Mind
The "Subtle Mind" exercise was quite different from the "Loving-kindness" exercise. There was much more of a focus on breathing to achieve a state of relaxation in order to develop the psychospiritual conscious. Both guided mental imagery through listening and visualization, but the "Subtle Mind" exercise had less words...aurally, time was spent listening to the peaceful sounds of the waves breaking on the beach with occasional riffs from a flutist. I liked it more than the "Loving-kindness" exercise because I was able to achieve a calmer effect. I felt as if I was in a deep trance at one point, but lost that sensation towards the end of the session. Before the first session of "Subtle Mind" I was frustrated and irritable. This exercise benefited my mental and physical wellness because it helped me to calm down, adjust, and cope.

Howell, I too felt a bit lost in time with the subtle exercise. I liked both, but I began crying with the loveing-kindness exercise. The passing of my little chihuahua Ruby has been very difficult for me. You have dogs yourself, I am sure you can relate. However, after I think with more practice of these exercises, I will be more at peace with her no longer with me. My big baby Bella gets in the way sometimes, but I have found dogs to be a calm part of my life as well. The unconditional love is very therapuetic.
ReplyDeleteHave you ever listened to whales singing?I will look for a good cd this weekend. Now, it will put you to sleep before you know it. So amazingly relaxing. You have a great point though. We are always so busy many of us do not take the time to ourselves. It is yet another reason to engage in physical activity. I am now finding these sessions along with yoga to take us to another level.
Howell, do you feel that you achieve a higher state of awareness when just listening to soothing sounds such as the waves or flutes or do you prefer the guided exercise more? Have you ever tried listening to Celtic harp music while meditating? I really like the wistfulness of the harp. Have you tried meditating while working out? For instance, if you are on a treadmill or stationary bike you can concentrate on your breathing and this will take you into a meditative state. You continue your workout while clearing your mind and focusing more on the inner you.
